What did I like about Huijia?

I have to admit there were some plus points of living on campus and things I liked about working at the school. They include:

  • No commute. You are 5 minutes walk from your classroom.
  • China is a difficult place to be if you don’t speak the language. Living in Building 10 means there is always someone close by when you need help with a problem.
  • Being able to walk home between classes and get work done (or take a nap) in the quiet privacy of your apartment is great.
  • Summer time rooftop get-togethers can be a lot of fun.
  • The campus is incredibly secure. There is no need to worry about break-ins or theft.
  • If you are a competent teacher, you are usually left to your own devices. As long as grades are in on time and paperwork is completed by given deadlines you will rarely have dealings with management.
  • The campus has a free gym. It’s not very well equipped and full of students getting in your way during the week but it does the job. There is also a swimming pool and ice hockey rink that is free for teachers to use.
  • Pay is good (or at least reasonable).
  • Savings potential is excellent.
  • Salary increases are very reasonable (8-10%) and are given every year to most staff (if the school is trying to find reasons to make you leave the pay rise might be one of the things you find being withheld come re-signing time).
  • I was always paid on time and in full.
